Today is the day. My book is officially being released. To recap, I’m going to cover several different topics surrounding the following context: A typical work environment is fraught with unclear scope of authority, misleading goals, agreement without cooperation, ineffective motivators, unclear decision rights, wrong information, and misleading structure.
The Six Common Challenges
When we dig into the research on the common issues that make for an unhappy, unproductive workplace, what do we find?
Note that these six challenges are all group-level dynamics. They occur because we are hardwired to belong, but in today’s organizations, the conditions that create that sense of belonging are suboptimal. So how do we best design systems of organizations to unleash human potential at work? What are the critical elements that all must be applied in concert to transform work?
The Six Critical Levers
I have been searching for this answer for over 20 years, in the process building one of the largest organization design practices in the world, advising dozens of CEOs and hundreds of executive and team leaders on the topic of organization design. I have found that six key levers must be pulled, and they must be pulled at the same time in the same direction to get the best business outcomes and the best experience for the workforce. These levers include:
- Hierarchy
- Networks
- Measurement
- Membership
- Responsibility
- Teaming
Peopletecture Combines Elements
I have coined the Peopletecture model (people and architecture) to describe the optimal way to combine these six elements. Through my experience advising dozens of CEOs and hundreds of executives and team leaders on the topic of organization design, I came to this optimal method which I discuss in my new book: Strategies for Organization Design: Using the Peopletecture Model to Improve Collaboration and Performance.
In my book, I show how the six elements in the Peopletecture model provide academics, leaders, and practitioners with a purposeful set of tools that improve the lives and experiences of people and achieve the best possible business outcomes.
Once again, the book is being released TODAY! I would love to hear from you so please email me at drmcdowell@orgstrategist.com.
